Joan MIRÓ (1893-1983) One of the great modern masters, the Spanish artist Joan Miró invented a visual language of abstract symbols in evocation of the Surrealist's dream world. As a painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramist, he produced highly original works of art which delight and challenge the imagination. Like his countrymen Picasso and Dalí, Miró was on the forefront of forging new forms in artistic expression, forms which could imply the depths and complexities of modern life. Always appearing as psychological narrations, his works often have a whimsical or humorous quality, with playfully distorted or twisted amoeboid images, vividly colorful, breathing with a life of their own. With great nonchalance, Miró balances the organic with the geometric, and creates some of the most beloved works of modern times.
